DeMOYO SS13

Haven spoken with Pai before and having seen her collections shown at Fashion Art Toronto, it was a really great experience for me to see her show her collection at World MasterCard Fashion Week. Unlike many other showings, Toronto Fashion Week is a fantastic place for up and comers to become true contenders in the Canadian fashion industry, and as Pai herself said, “It’s a great opportunity for buyers to get an intimate look at the collection.”

Named In Spira, her spring summer collection for 2013 showcases two things: The dualistic nature of the spiral, which is meant to represent the evolutionary process of learning and growing, and the coming into being. “The challenge for me which each season is how to transform an idea from a concept into a cohesive collection. This season, I looked towards the spiral, which comes from “inspiration”, which has its roots from “inspire”; meaning breath, and the Latin term for coil. Inspiration is what fuels life for me,” explains Chideya, “The path of the spiral only goes up; yet as it winds up the path, from different perspectives the same thing looks different and it never ends.”

It was great to see the visual representation of the dualistic nature of the spiral in DeMOYO’s collection in the use of stripes of various shapes and sizes, the play of light and dark as well as the casual and sophisticated silhouettes which created not only a very dramatic collection, but one that was intimate as well. The emphasis within the collection speaks to a love affair with the world and the universe through her use of fine cottons, light twill, silks, satins as well as the beautiful hand-crochet embroidery yarns.
